From Silk to Wool.
Richard Allan’s celebrated 1960s and 70s silk scarf designs are reimagined as hand-tufted wool rugs in collaboration with Roger Oates Design. Three original designs — Pebble, Manhattan and Dotty — have been carefully translated from silk into wool, retaining the energy and clarity of the original artwork while taking on a new richness and texture.
The collaboration brings together two British design names with a shared appreciation of colour, pattern and craftsmanship. Richard Allan’s original scarf designs have been carefully translated from silk into wool, retaining the energy and clarity of the artwork while taking on a new richness and texture.
Hand-tufted and finished by Roger Oates’ skilled team in Devon, each rug is made from 100% British wool. The change of material gives the designs a different physical presence: colour becomes more tactile, pattern gains depth, and the graphic quality of the original artwork takes on a new expression underfoot.
The collection was developed in close collaboration, with colours ranging from vivid combinations to quieter, more nuanced palettes. The result is a considered meeting of two British design traditions, bringing the spirit of the Richard Allan archive into contemporary interiors.
From silk to wool, the archive continues to evolve.
